Gaga is all good with Katy after her super shady private text messages about the singer were made public.
That's right, in case you missed it, the legal drama between pop star Kesha and music producer Dr. Luke continues to intensify. As the 'Praying' performer prepares for court, a range of various documents have been submitted to prove her heart-wrenching accusations of sexual harassment against her former manager.
Well one of those documents were a string of text messages between Kesha and her dear friends and music peer, Lady Gaga. In the texts, Kesha confides in Gaga about her horrendous abuse and expresses her frustration with fellow singer Katy Perry (who is known to have worked closely with Dr. Luke as well) for not supporting her.
Check out this excerpt from Variety detailing the exchange:
The text exchange begins with Kesha telling Gaga that she “was crying a lot today and needed my mom. I’m really upset with Katy Perry,” [...] “she could bring the whole thing to a head but she won’t.”
The disagreement spurs from what Perry maintains is a misunderstanding — that Perry was also sexually assaulted by Dr. Luke, but refused to speak out in support of Kesha.
Perry denied Kesha’s claim that she was “raped by the same man” in a July 2017 deposition, responding to the claims with “Absolutely not.”
Gaga’s involvement began when she replied to Kesha’s texts about Perry, saying,
“She is probably really afraid to lose everything,” according to the documents. “U are really strong standing up to him, she’s not as strong as u yet.”
Kesha replied,
“your [sic] right. I need to find sympathy and empathy for her. she’s so mean. it’s hard,” to which Gaga responded, “Do u want me to see if I can talk to her. I know she’s mean. … She makes me angry about s— [but] I just try to have empathy for her.”
Kesha refused Gaga’s offer, replying, “it’s not my battle.”
In her 2017 deposition, Perry responded to Kesha and Gaga’s claims, saying, “They think I was raped and I was not.” Now that content of these texts have made their way around the web, Gaga made it known that their is nothing but love between the two and brands the texts as "old" and something they've definitely "gotten over" as friends.
And Katy even doubled-down on the love by saying:
Yaasss that it what we love to see! What seems to be a central theme of the MeToo movement and the fight against sexual harassment/abuse, is to listen & respect the voice of women and however they choose to use it.
All in all , it seems Perry has chosen to remain pretty neutral. According to Variety Katy said, “People were generally very angry at me for not saying anything,” but that “I want to stay out of it because I know them both [Kesha and Dr. Luke] and I empathize with both of them,” she said. “The only two people that know what really went on are those two people.”
So true, but if we're being honest we're really rooting for Kesha and think there is so much to be said for how it could positively change and shape society if we believe more sexual assault survivors when they do come forward.
It also bares mentioning that in a statement on Friday, Sean Cassidy, a spokesman for Gaga, added, “These text messages paint a picture of one friend trying to help another through an extraordinary difficult time. They are several years old and in no way reflect Lady Gaga’s relationship with Katy Perry. These are private texts that — along with personal information from other high-profile individuals — have been publicly filed to generate media attention for this case.”
